Hi
The problem (for me) with backing up the *.dsk files is that you can only do
a full restore from them; there's no way to do a partial. So, I've been
favoring the method of running backup software on the VMware guest operating
systems themselves. That yields three methods:
1. run NetWorker client on the guests, and write the backup stream over the
LAN
2. run NetWorker storage node on the guests, and write the backup stream to
a disk or tape that is SCSI attached to the ESX server
3. run NetWorker storage node on the guest, and write the backup stream to a
disk or tape that is FC attached to the ESX server
Which option do you like the best?
Thanks

Hello all,
since the post is some month old - how do you now backup your *.dsk files?
Did you find a way around exporting the files with vmkfstools? We are using
the VMware ESX Server and by now have 400GB of virtual files. It is quite
painfull to export them before backup. So right now we backup each VM with
an Networker Client inside the VM.
URL: www.vmware.com/pdf/ESXBackup.pdf mentions that Legato Networker is not
able to backup files greater than 2 Gigs and therefore one has to use
vmkfstools. Does anybody know of any plans to overcome that limitation?
thanks for any ideas
Regards
Peter
