As Ken said, there is no need to stop the daemons, but you do have to make sure
that the error you want are alertable.

 Enter errpt -tF alert=1.  Look at what is alertable.

 See if the error you want is among them.  if not, then make it so as follows:


      Enter       errupdate
      enter      = AA8AB241:                    (or whatever hex number you
need)
      enter       Alert=TRUE

      ctrl-d ctrl-d

   Repeat this process for each error that is not in the orginal list.  After
you do it, each one should then become alertable, and show up in the list.
Mkaing an error alertable  causes AIX to invoke the trap-notify code shipped
with NetView which sends the error to trapgend.  Otherwise he is blind to the
error, just like a human operator who hasn't done errpt -a to see what is there.
