I can help you with this if you need it.
Your RMAN script will need to allocate multiple channels to use multiple drives. We backup over 3 PB of Oracle databases every month via RMAN and Netbackup.
We do normal FS type backups of everything EXCEPT for the Oracle table spaces and workspace. We leave those for each RMAN backup. Overall performance will
depend on multiple things like CPU, memory, disk performance, tape performance and such as that…but on dedicated systems, we normally see over 200 MB / sec per tape drive via RMAN backup to LTO-4 / 5 tape drives.

Subject: [Veritas-bu] Can RMAN be configured to use a limited number of tape drives?
Currently we do RMAN backups for a small DB which essentially uses a single stream with multiple jobs kicked off (i.e. it would only use one tape drive if it were still going
to tape).
We also do full filesystem backups for a couple of very large DBs after shutting down the DBs completely. For those we allocate 4 streams which go to 4 tape drives.
There is a question from DBAs about whether we could move do an RMAN backup rather than filesystem so as to avoid the downtime on the DB. My main question is how would we
setup an RMAN policy so that it uses the 4 tape drives (and only 4)?
For existing RMAN there are no streams listed so my assumption is that this is all controlled in the RMAN config scripts rather than at NetBackup policy level.
Also does anyone have an idea how much time difference an RMAN backup of a live database might take as compared to the cold backup of filesystems for a quiesced database?
Please don’t suggest doing Mirror BCV or filesystem snapshot instead. We’re already aware of such options but are currently looking at the RMAN question.
