I ran into something similar with an exchange 2000
environment at an odd patch level. Are you getting any errors in your
event logs? The following .dll below was the problem in my
case:
- Make a copy of %SystemRoot%\system32\esebcli2.dll for a
fallback plan - Copy <exchange_install_path>\Exchsrv\bin\esebcli2.dll
into %SystemRoot%\system32\
If you
compare the two files' versions you should see the one in system32 is
older. There's a technote on this out there somewhere. The problem exists
in both 2000 and 2003 IICRC.
Good
luck!

Ive been running into backup issues with exchange 2003. I
have had a 2 policies for over 2 years now. One for Information store and one
for mailbox store. Each works separately at different time intervals. Starting
this week, I would get error “FTL - tar file write error (10054)”. When I looked
it up, it stated that there was most likely an network error. Nothing was
changed on my network level and all NIC’s are full operational.
I have no anti-virus installed, I removed and reinstalled
agent, I even teamed the NIC’s on exchange. Still I get the same error. The
error comes usually after a couple of minutes into the backup
starts.
If anyone can give me some opinions please.
Thanks in advance,
Anas
