Hi
Yes I can help you here, because I have been in this boat before :-)

This task should be carried out while NO Backups are running.

Add the disks (Mirror them if you can please) and create a new logical
drive. Lets assume we call it Drive Letter N: and the Volume name is
NetBackup DB. Also, ensure you have a good TAPE Backup of your NetBackup
Catalog. I assume you do NOT write your catalog backups to disk??

Before starting this task, I would recommend shutting down the Request
Manager and Database Manager Services. Also, if anyone else usually has
access to NBU, explain it will be down for a while :-)

Now, assuming everything is on C: Drive using explorer to get to C:\Program
Files\VERITAS\NetBackup\db\images\<Client>.

Create a basic file called ALTPATH - with NO file extension whatsoever.
Open this file with NOTEPAD, but do NOT associate the file with Notepad.

Next, on the N: Volume that you created, create a folder path, for example
N:\Veritas\NetBackup\Alternate_DB\Images\<Client> where Client is the name
of the Client machine you backup.

Within the Altpath file you opened earlier, type in the new path directory
where the images are going to be located. (ie:
N:\Veritas\NetBackup\Alternate_DB\Images\<Client>)

Finally, copy all the images from C:\Program
Files\VERITAS\NetBackup\db\images\<Client> over to
N:\Veritas\NetBackup\Alternate_DB\Images\<Client>

When the copy process is successful, you can SAFELY delete the images on the
C: Drive for this particular client.

Now, I always suggest a COPY, because if you perform a MOVE and something
goes wrong, it gets a bit messy. The only file that you should NOT copy or
delete is the ALTPATH file you created for the client.

I am pretty sure the Technote I sent over goes into more detail, but this is
it in a nutshell. Repeat the process for your other clients.

Once all client images are moved to the N: drive, you can restart the
netbackup services on your Master. Effectively backups and restores can
carry on as normal.

Job Done !

Simon,

The images folder is 26GB as of now. I can add more disks into my DL380 but
I wanted to make sure that there is no problem having such a huge file.

Can you explain how Im supposed to relocate to another file. Would I
actually be moving the older files to a newer location and then any newer
files would be added to them or just the newer files are relocated and the
older ones stay in the same place??

The guys that implemented the server are a local vendor who really cant help
that much.

Also I don't know if I have logging. The log folder is only 230MB so I don't
think its that big a deal.

Thanks for your ongoing help.

Hi Anas

Same position I was in. Ok how big is the IMAGES folder? in size I mean.

You could as a temporary solution compress the catalog images using the
build in compress utility found in NetBackup.

However, I do not recommend this. I do recommend relocating the images to
another drive, it at all possible.

Whoever implemented the Server for NetBackup is going to need to address
this, because the images folder is the heart and soul of NetBackup. If you
lose these, or you run out of disk space, its going to cause you huge
trouble....

the above document may help.

But in order to get an idea that its THIS folder causing the issue, need to
know the size.

Because if you have used almost 60GB of Data on NetBackup, there was some
bad planning done.

DL380 - dont they have room to add further drives to them? If so, and you
can create a new logical drive, and the above link WILL help :-)

Greetings All,

I have NetBackup 5.1 MP5 on Windows 2003 running on a Hp DL380. I have 2
disks, 72GB, RAID 1. I only have one partition (C:\). Now my problem is that
I only have 9BG left on that disk. Its my master server and I have nothing
else running on it. In the directory c:\program
files\veritas\netbackup\db\images I found folders with folders with the
names of all my clients. What are these?? Can I delete them? Am I supposed
to be moving out this data to tape or what? I noticed several times that you
talk about miving catalog data to different sites. The only thing I said to
my remote site are weekly and monthly backups. Can anyone help me with a
plan to go start using. Thanks a lot.
