NetBackup is _superb_ at Disaster Recovery That _Works_ because of the
attention to detail its designers paid to catalog backup and recovery.
All it requires from you is to let the darned thing run.

If you don't have time for a zillion-GB catalog backup, check out the
multiple-tape, or two-phase catalog backup procedure in the SysAdmin
Guide, the procedure used for catalogs large enough to span tapes. How
to implement it, and how to recover with it, are covered. Note that the
documented procedure still requires a small window to run a minimalist
catalog backup. You can decide for yourself if you want to use this
supported procedure or substitute your own scheme for getting DR started
to the point where you can cleanly integrate the two-phase tapes. It's
not rocket science, but it does mean accepting a level of risk by giving
up a pretty bulletproof, vendor-supported process for one of your own.

Personally, I'm risk-averse when it comes to backup and RECOVERY. To
me, violating the catalog backup design concept--simple backup of a
quiescent, coherent file structure--means I've designed my setup
incorrectly or outgrown it.
