Not that I know that much about Solaris, but for an installation of that
size I would just make a combined master/media server on a Solaris box.

Since it is "just" test and dev I would try to keep it simple, not too many
storage groups, few volume pools. And also not too many retention periods.

 

What are your recovery needs?

 

For test and dev I would normally not implement anything fancy. One backup a
day would be my standard in our installation, and recovery are to the last
backup I have most of the time.

If you have the diskspace for it, I would also implement a DSSU for the
daily backups, so that you have a more easy recovery and don't have to wait
for tapes.

it's a dev and test env. 

clients would be approx 15.  all are solaris 9 clients and the server would
also be solaris 9.  Main app would be oracle.  recovery of oracle as well as
certain app like weblogic would be of importance.
