Assuming the amount of data to be backed up isn't going to increase you
can always "guess" by using your offsite logs.
=20
ie. If you send 10 tapes offsite per week and an additional 20 tapes at
end of month
=20
10 (tapes per year) x 52 (weeks in a year) =3D 520 tapes
20 (tapes monthlies) x 12 (months /yr) =3D 240 tapes
=20
etc... I have to keep a record of all tapes sent offsite so it was
fairly easy for me to do something similar to this using logged
information from months prior. If you don't have this kind of
information available, then you are basically on the mission outlined
below.

Deiter,=20

You need to have:=20

How much data per client=20
What is your retention policy,=20
What schedules - cum-incremental/ incremental (% of total data changed =
=3D
I used 20% as a rule of thumb) and full=20
Frequency of each schedule...=20
Number of copies for each backup.=20

I treated each client as individual - so each client was allocated media
according to it's size - I used to allocate min 1 tape per day per
client if they wanted off-site too. You could become too technical and
"group" all the incrementals together onto 1 tape, but then you do get
broken media...and if u allocate exactly you won;t have any spares.=20

Also - at around $50 per tape - not too expensive....considering the
risk of no recovery at all...=20

I used to have this in a Excel spreadsheet.=20

Good luck,=20

We have been asked to determine the amount of tapes needed to complete
all our current backup schedules till the end of this year.=20
I wondered if any one else has accomplished this and would have any
hints or tricks.=20
