Hmm..

I just checked one of my jobs which has a full backup scheduled for
every Saturday (Frequency / Weekly - window open Saturday) and a Full
Backup scheduled for the last Saturday of the month (calendar.) This
past weekend (both a Saturday and the last Saturday of the month) only
the Calendar backup ran.

I found this in the documentation...

Backup Frequency Determines Schedule Priority
If more than one automatic schedule is due for a client within a policy,
the backup frequency determines the schedule that Netbackup uses:

Jobs from the schedule with the lower frequency (longer period between
backups) always get higher priority. For example, a schedule with a
backup frequency of one year has priority over a schedule with a backup
frequency of one month.
If the Netbackup scheduler encounters a backup policy with two schedules
(one full, one incremental) that are each due to run, are each within
their defined time window, and are each configured with the same
frequency value, the schedule that is alphabetically first will be
chosen to run.
For example, Netbackup prioritizes the following three schedules in the
order shown:

monthly_full (frequency is one month)
weekly_full (frequency is two weeks)
daily_incremental (frequency is one week)
If all three schedules are due for a client, Netbackup adds the job for
the monthly full to the worklist and skips the other two.

If this applies to both frequency / frequency backups, and also to
frequency / calendar backups (as my eample from this past weekend shows)
then a policy with fulls set for the same windows with a 1 week and a 1
month schedule would still only produce 1 backup a week.

This seems to contradict what you were saying about longer backup
windows?! Then again I could be reading you wrong? Either way I just
need to find a standard and re-work all my jobs because the 50 different
schedule types is driving me insane.

Six months ago I was all frequency-based, and now I've nearly everything
converted to calendar-based schedules and the results (to me) are
excellent. (***)

Let's say I do "fulls" on Friday nights, but every month I want a "full"

that is retained longer. With frequency-based scheduling, each Friday
night I'd have some regular and some long-retention backups, sometimes
causing a much longer backup window than expected as I might have lots
of backups with one retention, but most tape drives tied up with the
other retention (Most of my backups are multiplexed). With
calendar-based scheduling, I specify the first Friday of the month for
the long retention and other Fridays for the regular retention. Works
great. Note that you specify both calendar days and windows, so for
many of my "monthly fulls", I have a second window (either the next day
or the 2nd week Friday) and specify "Retries allowed after run day". If
an important monthly backup fails, then it is not only retried on the
run day, but during a later window.

The same goes for yearly backups. And with yearly backups, the data
owners usually *want* their long-retention backup on or closely after a
certain date, so calendar-based scheduling is perfect.

This is all with v5.1MP4 ... I'm ignorant still of v6.0. Someone care
to briefly explain new features for us?

cheers, wayne

P.S. (***) Note that I'm calling calendar-based scheduling excellent
with respect to frequency-based scheduling ... I am in no way calling
NetBackup excellent (or otherwise).
