You are not nor should you ever delete anything within the catalog at
will. Archiving the catalog simply removes the .f file or files file
from the disk and places it onto tape. When you need to restore it moves
the data back from tape to the disk. This reduces the amount of required
disk space for your catalog. This is particularly useful for users with
retention periods of infinite because those catalogs will keep growing
larger and ever larger.
That's why. :)

Why in the world would you archive/delete a catalog? Compress or backup

a catalog - not archive it?

That's the stuff. Exactly what I'm looking for.

Now, we don't seem to have the bpcatarc* features for catalog
archiving?!?!? We've got MP7. Why don't we have the new features?

Catalog Archiving or the way to move some larger .f files from the
catalog to tape thus off loading from the disk has been around since 4.5
FP3-
Below is a link to the 4.5 FP3 PDF feature set admin guide and under the
section "using Catalog for catalog backups" there is a section tilted
"Catalog Archiving" and starting on page 193

I mean archiving tape image files from the imageDB... The stuff in
/usr/openv/netbackup/db/images.

I've been told that it's possible with 4.5MP6 by multiple people.

Do you mean archive the image files in the imageDB?

Or are you talking about disk based backup images moving to tape?

In the never-ending quest to keep our NetBackup filesystem from filling
up, I would like to institute archiving old backup images to tape. Some
of you helpful folks have told me that the version of NetBackup I'm on
now, 4.5MP6, has that capability, and that the "how-to" is in the UNIX
Admin Guide.

Well, you must have access to newer documentation than I. The
documentation I have, which came straight off the NB4.5MP6 CD, doesn't
mention Catalog Archiving. We've confirmed that the documentation is out
of date, but I'll be jiggered if I can't find anything newer. The
version on Veritas's website is the same old outdated version I have.
