That's the one question I forgot to include in my post:
Which query command will tell me which media server NBU thinks has the tape?
Update:
bpimmedia -mediaid <> yields "no entity was found" for any of these in question.
bpmedialist -L -m S00104 yields "not found in NB media database ..."
vmquery -deassignbyid -m S00104 <pool> 0 took care of it.
