When is a media server required? I've got one Master/Media AIX =
powerhouse
server that backs up about 300 servers onto 6 LTO-1 drives. Total data =
is
about 5 TB for my weekend fulls which take about 20 hours for all of =
the
backups except for the big one. They consist of mainly Windows but =
many
AIX, Linux, Solarius and some slow VMWare servers (Windows). =20
=20
I have one fileserver that has grown to be more than =BD a TB of data =
and it
takes about 28 hours to complete its full backup. Since it's a cluster
server I have to specify the shares (Windows resources) separately on =
the
'Pathname or Directive'. The other node of the cluster server is about =
400
TB and that one is done after about 23 hours. I've been told in the =
past
that if you have a server that has more than 200 gig of data then you =
should
get a media server for it. I have 3 other servers that are between 175 =
and
250 gig that take about 12-15 hours each (1 old server and two newer =
faster
ones).
=20
1. What benefit will the media server have? I'll need to sell this to
management to substantiate the additional cost. Darn we are already =
paying
more than $50,000 for the annual maintenance costs for the client, =
server,
drive, db, vaulting licenses!
2. Should I put the media server installation on the file server
cluster that has grown to more than 500 gigs or should I dedicate a new
server to fill this function? =20
3. Can the media server be a Windows server or should it be AIX like
the master?
4. I take it I should dedicate some drives to the media server so I'll
need to purchase one or more HBA fiber cards for my tape drives from =
the
media server?
=20
Thanks for your advice in advance!
