Rene,
I am backing up 20+ SQL 2k servers on W2k Advanced Server. On the OS or
file system backups (FS), I configure excludes by opening Admin Console,
then expand Host Properties and click on Clients. Once the Client screen
appears, click on the client name. In the Client Properties window, click
on Exclude. If am backing up the drive where the SQL files reside, I
exclude with *.mdf & *.ldf. That way the SQL db files are ignored.
As far as the SQL files, you should find files names master, msdb, pubs,
model and in other database files in the folder you noted. In some
installations, the database files are stored on there own drives. They
would not appear in the folder named below.

Good Luck!!

Know Oracle but new to SQL Server.

I was planning on having two policies to backup this server. The first one
is for the OS and the second is for the SQL-Server database. Looking at the
manual, I couldn't find any reference to an exclude list for Windows 2000
policy. Normally, in Solaris, I would backup the system minus the Oracle
datafiles. Is there a way to exclude backup of the SQL Server files during
the system backup? It appears the SQL Server was installed in D:\Microsoft
SQL Server\MSSQL. Are all the relevant SQL Server files contained in this
directory?

Any input or alternative approach appreciated?

Regards,

Rene
