Those of you that are utilizing the VCB backup option with NetWorker, do you
find that it can actually replace the traditional agent backup for
filesystem backups?
e.g. is the restore granularity good enaugh? and is the option to take
incrmental backups of the filesystem working properly?
In theory it can do Single File Recovery and incremental backups. When
this works it is every bit as good as traditional client backups.
In practice there are lots of cases where SFR is not possible, such as
the mysterious "non-ascii filenames". This comes out as a warning in a
supposedly successful backup, whereas IMHO if you expect a file-level
recovery and this is not possible it should be an error.
VCB will be dead soon anyway, replaced by something better. I would
question whether it is worth investing any effort in this at this time.
My recent experience of VCB is 7.6 is not particularly good and I am not
impressed.
