We had the same situation and it took a long time to sort out.  For our
environment, the afflicted host had a problem where the smaller filesystems
would succeed and the larger one(s) would fail.  It turned out that the
Application support people were concerned with a tcp DOS attack.  They set
the tcp connections to get chopped off after 30 minutes.  Check the ndd
settings in the /etc/rc.config.d/nddconf file.  Use the ndd command to
check and set as well.  I think it was the tcp_time_wait_interval setting
which matters when backing up slow clients.
