We have a group of Sony S-AIT drives in a Sony PetaSite tape library. I
can assure you that even with these drives connected to our Sunfire v480
server running Solaris 9, NetWorker 7.1.3 and nothing else, we do not come
anywhere near close to pushing data at our tape drives as fast as they can
go, but they have been working quite well for us. Last night was a light
night for backups here due to a massive network outage, but we did backup
2.1TB on our new PetaSite and our old Qualstar before the network died at
midnight.

For 750GB of data per night, you could probably fit it on a single S-AIT
tape cartridge (depending how well your data compresses).

In fact, just yesterday, we had an additional four S-AIT drives and
another tape cabinet added to our PetaSite by a Sony SE and one of our
VAR's technical engineers. We upgraded from a PetaSite that held 192
cartridges and five S-AIT drives to a configuration that holds 588 tapes
and nine tape drives (four of which are for NDMP backups). Our original
PetaSite configuration has been in use since early August. If you are
interested, I would be happy to refer you to our VAR.
