This newer syntax is inherently more secure. This is mainly because in
the old scheme both parts of the specification (before and after the @)
were ambiguous. Before the @ could be a user ID or a group, and after
the @ could be a host or a domain. The newer syntax pins it down more
accurately. There is actually more to it than you have mentioned, for
example instead of "host=" you can specify "domain=". Also it works,
whereas in some cases for domains the old system plain didn't.

The new scheme also works for some versions of NetWorker 6. I know for a
fact that it works with 6.1.3.
