Hi Bob,
According to your explanation, I understood that this behaviour of Networker
is normal. It seems to me okey However, when we did incremental backup we
can restore files from full backup as well as incremental backup without
changing browsing time. After the scanning operation ( scanner -i .... ),
somehow networker doesn't list files backup with full backup. We need to
change browse time to list the files.

We did the scanning with scanner -i. In manual page of scanner command, it
is recommanded to use scanner -m and then user nsrck -L7.

Taken from manual page :
"Rebuilds both the media and the online file indexes from the volumes read.
If you specify a single
save set with the −S ssid option, only entries for the specified save set
are copied to the online file
index. Note that for version 6.0 and later, if you have the tape that
contain the index backups that
go along with the data backups, the recommended way of restoring your
indexes is to run scanner
−m to reload the media database entries for the index and data backups. Once
that is done, you
should run nsrck −L7 −t date <clientname> to recover the index for the
client as of the time of
the backups on the tape. This will roll the index entries for that time back
into the index. Howev
er, if you have tapes for which there are no index backups, then you will
need to use the −i
option to reconstruct the index entries."

What does nsrck -L7 is used for. How does it find the volume needed to
restore index. Is this command overwrites the index of this client, or it
merges the index at that time with the current index.
How does the index of this client will be effected by using this command?
Any experience will be helpful.

Best regards,

Yener KILIÇ

Hi,
That is Networker 'working as designed' - you can't see the files
because they weren't there when the backup was run. Even though you backed
up an incremental, the index for that time shows all files that existed on
the server AT THE TIME OF THE BACKUP, the list will include files that were
backed up on the full backup that were not deleted or changed (so not backed
up on the incremental backup) as well as the changed files backed up with
the incremental backup.

Trust me, Networker is a lot easier to get on with if you don't try
to make it do things it is not designed to. Have a think about it, do you
really want to see all files that have existed since the last backup? What
about a restore, you restore a folder from a certain date and a user
complains that you've restored a file that was deleted several days before
that date. It's a minefield you're straying into. Beware....

Bob.

Hi,
We have a restoring situation here.

We backed up large amounts of files in a directory (20 years browse and
retension time). Then we delete those files. Afterwards, we added new files
( completely different files) to the same directory and done an
we then done an incremental backup. This incremental backup spread a new a
volume. Somehow ( we did some operations, cloning and removing clonned
volume.) above (full and one inremental) two save sets became revorable. We
then remove and scan those volumes by using scanner command.

When we try to restore files in full backup, we cannot restore them (
recover command cannot find files in index db). It only gives us file in
incremental backup. We need to change browse time to get files in full
backup. However we don't want to behave like that. Recover command be able
to restore all files without changing browse time. How can we do that?

Thanks in advance.

Best regards,

Yener KILIÇ
