Joel,
As far as I know, the NetWorker GUI will not show you all of the tapes
needed for a restore - it only sends notifications for the one it CURRENTLY
needs. So if you have a dataset that spans 5 tapes, it will only ask for one
tape at a time during the restore. However, in the NetWorker User GUI or the
command-line recover utility, you can find out which volumes are needed before
initiating the actual command to begin recovering. In the GUI, it is under the
View menu as "Required Volumes" (I think). At the command-line recover
utility, simply type "volumes" once your recovery set has been established and
selected. NetWorker will tell you not only which volumes you need, but also
where they are.
Essentially, the ability to find out the complete list of volumes
needed lies in the hands of whoever is initiating the restore. We have issued
communications to all people in our company who restore data from NetWorker
backups telling them how to find this list of tapes. Once they have the list,
they contact our operators who track down the tapes, whether they are offsite
or on a shelf in the data center.
I hope this answers your question - feel free to contact me with any
further questions.
Cheers!

Subject: offsite media list for recover
Hey All,
When a recover is started that requires media from offsite I want to
send a list of the needed media to the operators so they can trek
offsite to get this media(in one trip). I'm not exactly sure how I'm
going to go about doing this... I was thinking about creating a
notification for them... but then there would be a separate notification
for each piece of media. Does anyone know what priority level the
notification is for media required for a recover that is not available
in the libraries? Is there a way to find out all the needed media from
the server side?
How do other people handle this? Do your operators have access to a
Networker GUI? Just trying to get some ideas of how I'm going to handle
these occasions automatically (or at least without requiring my
intervention).
Thanks,
Joel
