Amanda would be a great solution. But doesn't it have the limitation that
it cannot span backups across multiple tapes?

Yes, at the moment it won't stack backups on a tape (burn a full tape every
day) and backups can't span a tape.

That second one can be helped by defining several configurations
(DailySet1, DailySet2, etc.) such that any one job should fit on a tape,
and then kick them off via separate lines in your crontab.

I believe both of those are on the Amanda folk's "to do" list.

We used to have a product installed on our Pyramids called "virtual tape"
that would take care of spanning tapes for applications that couldn't. It
kept the program from ever seeing an EOT, just every so often a write would
take a long time to complete (while the tape got swapped). I don't know if
there's anything like it in the open source sector, but it doesn't sound
too hard to write.
