I've got this exact same library here. Unfortunately I haven't gotten
it hooked up to my server yet. I've read through the user's guide and
have a few ideas as to what might work.

1) Are you sure that the auto-clean setting doesn't work on the
   expansion unit. I just went to my library and set auto-clean on
   the expansion unit. Since I don't have it hooked up to my server
   I can't verify what Networker sees, but the library let me set it.

2) If you can, try moving one of the drives to the expansion unit. This
   may allow you to turn on auto-clean on both units if the above
   doesn't work. The tape drives can be installed in any unit in
   any order.

3) Set the import/export option on the expansion unit to 1-Slot, see
   page 71 of the user's guide. This will cause the library to use
   the front slot of the left magazine as a load port, lowering your
   total slot count. You could do this on both units if you don't want
   to use auto-clean. This should get you down to 40 slots I think.
