Zosi,

If you plan to keep using a single stripe on your
Data Protection for SQL backups, then you should
be able to turn collocation off without ill effects
to any particular Data Protection for SQL restore.
You may affect the ability to restore two separate
SQL Server backups simultaneously, but that may not be
an issue to you. It seems your larger issue is running
out of tapes which should be helped by turning
collocation off.
