Ken,
I have the folowing in my /etc/profile to handle this:
if [[ "$LOGNAME" = "root" ]]
then
PS1='# '"$(hostname)"':${PWD}==>'
fi
This puts the hostname followed by a : followed by the current
directory.

This is an AIX question:
How does one set-up the root # prompt to display "pwd" (print working
directory)??
Someone out there must know this.
Using AIX 4.3.3
