What error do you get when running as the backuppc user (or whatever id the daemon is using when the link fails)? Also, is the target disk formatted with a linux filesystem that supports hardlinks? T

If you installed from the sourceforge tarball you should be able to specify where you want the archive. If you used a .deb/.rpm packaged version, /data/backuppc doesn't sound like the right place. Tr

There isn't a restriction if you do the install yourself. If you install backuppc from the sourceforge tarball, you can choose your own topdir during the install procedure and everything is adjusted
